Genticorum has become one of the most sought-after exponents of Quebecois musical culture, having now performed and toured across North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania – more than 15 countries in all. Firmly rooted in the soil of their native land, this energetic and original power trio also incorporate the dynamism of contemporary North American and European folk cultures into their music. They weave precise and intricate fiddle and flute work, gorgeous vocal harmonies, energetic foot percussion, and guitar and bass accompaniment into a jubilant musical feast. Genticorum’s distinctive sound, sense of humour and stage presence make it a supreme crowd pleaser – though never at the expense of the music. Genticorum’s second album, Malins Plaisirs, released in Canada in 2005, won in the Best Ensemble category at the Canadian Folk Music Awards and was nominated for Juno (Canada) and Félix (Quebec) awards. Now released in Europe (in collaboration with the Weatherbox label), the album is getting rave reviews on the other side of the Atlantic. The trio’s brand new album, La Bibournoise, was released in Canada in April 2008 to critical acclaim. This work builds on Genticorum’s trademark sound, combining rollicking interpretations of Quebec folk songs with original instrumentals written in the traditional style. Energetic yet folky, its harmonized songs every bit as excellent as its most frenzied rhythms – this is La Bibournoise, and sometimes it’s hard to believe it is the work of just three band members!

Avec ses nominations aux Juno et à l’ADISQ, et ses Prix de Musique Folk Canadienne (Meilleur Ensemble 2006 – Meilleur album trad 2008), Genticorum est un des groupes phares au coeur de l’engouement général que connaît actuellement la musique traditionnelle québécoise.

Le trio Genticorum, formé il y a sept ans, s’est produit sur de nombreuses scènes de renom et a été programmé dans plusieurs festivals prestigieux du milieu world/folk, tels Celtic Connections en Écosse, le Tonder Folk Festival au Danemark, le Vijlandi Folk Festival en Estonie, le Festival International de Chihuahua au Mexique, le Independent Music Festival d’Alexandrie en Égypte mais aussi en Malaisie, en Israël, ainsi qu’en Australie lors de deux tournées mémorables… Ils ont été sélectionnés pour les concerts-vitrines du Womex à Newcastle, et tournent régulièrement en Grande-Bretagne, au Danemark, aux États-Unis et au Canada.

Dans la continuité des deux premiers albums, le troisième disqueLa Bibournoise, est imprégné des sonorités qui constituent la signature du groupe : le jeu précis du violon et de la flûte, les superbes harmonies vocales, la guitare et la basse tout en nuances et une podorythmie bien dosée. Le tout produit une musique tour à tour jubilatoire, festive ou planante… Quelques surprises dans le dernier album : les trois membres du groupe s’échangent le rôle de chanteur principal ; le multi-instrumentiste Alexandre de Grosbois laisse la flûte pour le violon, accompagnant celui de Pascal Gemme dans un duo des plus groovy ; de son côté, Yann Falquet continue à explorer les diverses possibilités sonores de la guimbarde. On a parfois du mal à croire qu’ils ne sont que trois !

Comme sur les albums précédents, La Bibournoise rassemble des pièces instrumentales originales ainsi que des chansons issues du répertoire traditionnel québécois. Les histoires farfelues côtoient des récits épiques et chaque morceau est un tableau vivant, fantaisiste, inspirant, ou entraînant.
